News about the research services
WE INFORM OUR RESEARCHERS AND READERS THAT THE LIBRARY’S READING ROOM AND RESEARCH SERVICE WILL BE OPERATING AGAIN FROM MAY 20, 2021!
If you have any questions, please contact research.hermuz@gmail.com.

There is a public research service available in the collections of the Herman Ottó Museum. Under the law on research in museum institutions, research is free and subject to written permission.

The application for a research permit can be downloaded here, the rules for research can be read here. Only on-site research is possible in the collections, only the published databases can be searched remotely.

Please fill out the signed license application and mail it to kutatoszolgalat.hermuz@gmail.com or to the mailing address of the collection you would like to research, which is written below! You can also send the application by post or submit it in person to the research service of the given collection.

To start the research, the written permission of the museum and a personal appointment conciliation are required.

If you know which of our collections you would like to research, please contact our staff at the contacts below!

If you request a prior consultation or your research topic may affect several collections or museum libraries, please contact the head of the research service.

The computerized register allows the data to be sorted according to different aspects and lists to be compiled according to the different needs and expectations of the researchers. For example, it is possible to search by inventory number, discipline, subject of recording, type of photo inventory item, location of recording, name of collector / creator, time of making, and size of photo inventory item.

Our latest creations are currently being scientifically processed. They are locked until they are registered or subject to research protection and are therefore not accessible to researchers.

Viewing negatives is possible with the help of thread gloves, a negative screen and various types of magnifiers. If there is an object photo on the descriptive card for the selected negative, then we show it to the researchers, or if we have already digitized the negatives, they can be viewed on a computer. Borrowing the negatives are not possible for external researchers and other institutions. A “copy” of the selected negatives can be requested. This is subjected to director’s permit and a fee shall be paid.

Object Collection

The Fine Arts Collection of the Herman Ottó Museum includes more than 17,000 works of art. A significant part of the heterogeneous collection consists of memories of local fine art life: selected works by past and present artists of the region. The graphic collection has a national outlook and significance beyond the borders of the region. The Herman Ottó Museum manages the fine art collection of Dr. Sándor Petró, the legacy of Endre Szász (preserved by Lula Szász) and the Kövesi collection taken over from the Magyar Nemzeti Bank in November 2015.

Fine Arts Data Repository

Our documents provide source material for the processing of the fine art life of the region and the work of the artists in the region. Outstanding data storage units: the documents of the 1906 and 1910 traveling exhibitions of Upper Hungary from the legacy of Bertalan Balogh, the legacy of artist Dezső Mokry Mészáros, the small-print collection of painter László Ficzere.

The research service is continuous in the collection. By prior appointment, we are available to researchers at an individually agreed time. The research is accessible and free of charge to all interested parties, provided that the research permit is requested.
