The exhibition in Ottó Herman’s former holiday retreat showcases the zoologist and ethnographer’s widespread scientific work, and his activities in politics and public life.

The holiday home of Ottó Herman, also known as “the last Hungarian polymath”, was built in the romantic setting of Lillafüred between 1898 and 1903 based on the plans of his wife, Kamilla Borosnyay. The first exhibition in the former villa (after being refurbished into the Ottó Herman Memorial House) was opened in 1964. The current exhibit titled “No glory, only duty…” (Dicsőség nincsen, csak kötelesség) was created during the time of the building’s restoration between 2006 and 2007.

The first room represents the study where the scientist’s personal belongings, letters and family photos are on display.

The second room presents his scientific work, with special emphasis on his research on ornithology and the Hungarian spider fauna. The exhibit also deals with Ottó Herman’s activities related to archeology and ethnography. His piscatorial work is shown through a diorama made from fishing equipment. The exhibit also offers interactive elements: via touchscreen interfaces visitors can access various videos, audio recordings, bird noises and even a quiz, making the collection’s presentation even more engaging.
