The Coin collection of the Museum

The coin collection of the museum, founded in 1899, was the most significant collection of the institution until the 1940s. Two years after its creation, nearly 2500 exhibited money could be seen by visitors in the Papszer building, and at the end of 1945, 14334 items were in its inventory. According to the most recent revision (2014), the coin cabinet counts 21620 registered items, and together with the duplicate-, replacement and still to be inventoried pieces, this number approaches 40000. There are 41 (Roman, medieval and modern) finds from the present-day collecting area of the museum, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, in the register. Representing the universal history of money, payment instruments issued in more than 200 countries in different periods, in addition to payment coins and banknotes representing the entire history of Hungarian currency, prominent figure’s coins, school, military and political insignia of Hungarian cities are also present in large number in the collection.
